Mobile measurement campaigns, driving or on foot, with GPS Positioning
The NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H has been designed to perform mobile measurement campaigns for DVB-T and DVB-H networks. This handheld equipment can be used in a vehicle, or on foot (indoor or outdoor).
The campaign can be dedicated to a single channel (frequency) or for multiple channels at the same time.
The main measurement functions are the following:
- Real time measurements and display of RF and MPEG data analysis.
- Internal recording of measurement data on the NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H
- Automatic GPS position display and recording on the NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H equipment
- Manual position input capability (in case of no GPS reception or for additional notes)
- Mapping display of the measurement data. Click here to see an example of data display in Google Earth.
RF analysis
- RF parameters: RF level, Carrier / Noise level
- Modulation parameters: MER, BER, PER
- Transmission parameters: Cell ID, COFDM Mode, Guard interval, Constellation, Code rate
MPEG-T analysis
- TR 101290:
- 1st priority: TS Sync Loss,Sync byte error, PAT error and PMT error
- 2nd priority: Transport error ,CRC error ,PCR error, CAT error and PTS error
- 3rd priority: NIT error, Unreferenced PID, SI repetition error, SDT error*, EIT error*, RST error*
- Others: PID and PMT bit rate*, PCR / Jitter*, FER and MFER.

Expert module* (optional)
The expert module offers in depth analysis of DVB-T and DVB-H transport streams. Based on a Transport Stream capture of 30s, the NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H decodes the data offering powerful features such as SI/PSI tables decoding and DVB-H burst visualisation.
DVB-T Table decoding and in-depth analysisThe expert option decodes the SI/PSI tables and offers a clear tree representation.
Every time a table is present on a chosen PID, a bar is shown, with a width depending on its duration. Clicking on a bar, you see all the content in the selected table. You can thus double check that a parameter is compliant with the standards, or even find the source of a problem.
The table content can easily be exported as a XML file.
DVB-H in-depth analysis:
For DVB-H signals, the NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H offers many analysis features such as the burst displays, IP layer analysis and comparison before and after correction. DVB-H features are the following:
- MPEG2 layer analysis: Detection of all PIDs, detection of NULL packets, display of the DVB-H burst structure & Measurement of minimum and maximum delay for each DVB-H packet
- MPE Layer analysis: Transport Packet(s) used, of all MPE/MPE-FEC sections and SI/PSI tables, clear text output of the SI/PSI tables with XML export possibility, display of the Delta-T information.
- IP layer analysis: Time reference of each received IP packet, source and Destination IP addresses and UDP ports
Scanning of the DVB band
The NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H can perform a scan on the frequency band to automatically detect the available multiplex channels.
Import / export of data
Data import (coming soon): Capability to connect and receive a signal from a DVB-H mobile phone or handset.
This feature will allow the user to confirm the performance of the handset or to simulate the mobile reception of the end user. (For more information please contact us).
Data export: The recorded measurement data can be exported as a CSV file (Excel compatible or to radio communication planning software (like ATDI, LStelcom…) in order to compare the predicted coverage with a measurement data obtained in a real world environment.
You can also export data in Google Earth format, click here to see an example.
Content viewing and audio listening
The audio and video content can be listened to and viewed while the real time measurements on the NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H are being performed.
The content can also be recorded along with the measurements.
MPEG-H analysis (optional)
- MPEG2 layer analysis: Detection of all PIDs, detection of NULL packets, display of the DVB-H burst structure & Measurement of minimum and maximum delay for each DVB-H packet
- MPE Layer analysis: Transport Packet(s) used, of all MPE/MPE-FEC sections and SI/PSI tables, clear text output of the SI/PSI tables, display of the Delta-T information.
- IP layer analysis: Time reference of each received IP packet, source and Destination IP addresses and UDP ports
Campaign analysis with Goldeneye
Campaign representation
- During a campaign, all the measurements (with their GPS position, if available) are logged and stored on the internal hard drive. The campaign file containing all this data can then be downloaded onto a PC and opened with Goldeneye.
- Goldeneye creates a geographical representation of the campaign with a different color for each level value (or field strength). Clicking on a point, you get information such as the modulation parameters and the speed.
- In the “Superimposed” tab, Goldeneye plots level curves. If the campaign contains data from several multiplexes, the curves can be superimposed for easy comparison.
- All details of each measurement point can be found in the measurement table (GPS position, C/N, MER, BER, PER, FER, MFER…)
Data filtering
You can choose the data you want to display in the geograp hical representation, filtering by:
- Distance (mean value on X meters).
- Cell ID
- Field strength value
Channel Impulse Response logging
In addition to the measurements, the NAVIGATOR DVB-T/H also logs the channel impulse response in the campaign file.
Clicking on a measurement point, you see the all the peaks that were detected, with their delay and level.
Video recording
As an option, the Navigator DVB-T/H can record the transport stream while logging all the measurements. In Goldeneye, all the videos contained in the transport stream can thus be replayed with sound. When the video is playing, the cursor moves automatically (either on the geographical representation, or on the curves or even the measurement table), so that you see signal values associated.
With this option, you will qualify consequences of bad signal values directly on the video!
Data export
The measurement data can be exported to Google Earth, MapPoint, MapInfo, ATDI …
